Casa Matriz is an installation that presents the viewer with a singular mediated experience via dense video footage, diarised notes, geo-location maps and live recordings. It presents three hanging semi-translucent screens in the centre of a room upon which three videos are projected as a soundscape plays, a camera on tripod can be seen which transmits footage to a television in the adjacent room. All recordings, sounds and footage that is projected on the screens were recorded between late March and June 2014 in Barcelona, this is the basis of the / my experience which is then filtered through different media.

Projection 1 (25m loop) contains video recordings with footage from night clubs to police presence, all faces are pixelated, Projection 2 (50m loop) contains notes, diaristic entries and a text based meta-language of an experience, Projection 3 (50 m loop) is a 3D generated view of the streets of Barcelona that slithers through the alleyways — and throughout the exhibition space a soundscape of recordings, conversations, dreams and songs plays over bassy speakers. Finally, a camera in the main space feeds live footage of (unaware) visitors watching the work through to a television in the adjacent room as the work feeds back into itself.

The exhibition was created in collaboration with JMMJ who wrote two texts for the space; google translate glitches the translation from Spanish but it really conveys the basis of the work —

“The poetic ambiguity of an experience that sometimes seems not to have occurred. Failing to be you in a place where all say they know who you are, you being in a place where everything seems to be a fleeting illusion. The dialectic excitement / frustration vertebra our collective psychosis, capitalism knows it very well. The hedonistic euphoria always comes with a harrowing day hangover. Vomit the blue pill of happiness. Vomiting your memories of that space of promise. Not belong to any place and know that only you belong to Google. It is difficult to talk about this. Joining durable material to tell. Invent a device aestheticizing des-control. Take the money and run. Not wanting to be anywhere / Want deeply belong. Over again caught in the mechanical excitation / frustration. Psychosis again. Capital-ism Headquaters.”

“La ambigüedad poética de una experiencia que en ocasiones parece no haber ocurrido. El no poder ser tú en un lugar donde todos dicen saber quién eres, el ser tú en un lugar donde todo parece una ilusión efímera. La dialéctica excitación/frustración vertebra nuestra psicosis colectiva, el capitalismo sabe hacerlo muy bien. La euforia hedonista siempre viene acompañada de un día de angustiosa resaca. Vomita la pastilla azul de la felicidad. Vomita tus recuerdos de aquel espacio de promesa. No pertenecer a ningún lugar y saber que solo le perteneces a Google. Es difícil hablar de todo esto. Juntar materiales precarios para contarlo. Inventarse un dispositivo estetizante de des-control. Take the money and run. No querer ser de ningún sitio/Desear profundamente pertenecer a algo. Otra vez de nuevo atrapados en la mecánica excitación/frustración. Otra vez la psicosis. Capital-ism Headquaters.”
